RESUMO

Muscle fatigue significantly impacts coordination, stability, and speed in daily activities. Accurate assessment of muscle fatigue is vital for effective exercise programs, injury prevention, and sports performance enhancement. Current methods mostly focus on individual muscles and strength evaluation, overlooking overall fatigue in multi-muscle movements. This study introduces a comprehensive muscle fatigue model using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) weighting. NMF is employed to analyze the duration multi-muscle weight coefficient matrix (DMWCM) during synergistic movements, and four electromyographic (EMG) signal features in time, frequency, and complexity domains are selected. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) optimizes feature weights. The DMWCM and weighted features combine to calculate the Comprehensive Muscle Fatigue Index (CMFI) for multi-muscle synergistic movements. Experimental results show that CMFI correlates with perceived exertion (RPE) and Speed Dynamic Score (SDS), confirming its accuracy and real-time tracking in assessing multi-muscle synergistic movements. This model offers a more comprehensive approach to muscle fatigue assessment, with potential benefits for exercise training, injury prevention, and sports medicine.

RESUMO

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterized by the degenerative senescence in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors, which is accompanied by the accumulation of iron ions in the aging retina. However, current models of acute oxidative stress are still insufficient to simulate the gradual progression of AMD. To address this, we established chronic injury models by exposing the aRPE-19 cells, 661W cells, and mouse retina to iron ion overload over time. Investigations at the levels of cell biology and molecular biology were performed. It was demonstrated that long-term treatment of excessive iron ions induced senescence-like morphological changes, decreased cell proliferation, and impaired mitochondrial function, contributing to apoptosis. Activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and the downstream molecules were confirmed both in the aRPE-19 and 661W cells. Furthermore, iron ion overload resulted in dry AMD-like lesions and decreased visual function in the mouse retina. These findings suggest that chronic exposure to overloading iron ions plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of retinopathy and provide a potential model for future studies on AMD.

RESUMO

Carbon nanofiber (CNF) films or mats have great conductivity and thermal stability and are widely used in different technological processes. Among all the fabrication methods, electrospinning is a simple yet effective technique for preparing CNF mats, but the electrospun CNF mats are often brittle. Here, we report a feasible protocol by which to control the alignment of carbon black nanoparticles (CB NPs) within CNF to enhance the flexibility. The CB NPs (~45 nm) are treated with non-ionic surfactant Triton-X 100 (TX) prior to being blended with a solution containing poly(vinyl butyral) and polyacrylonitrile, followed by electrospinning and then carbonization. The optimized CB-TX@CNF mat has a boosted elongation from 2.25% of pure CNF to 2.49%. On the contrary, the untreated CB loaded in CNF displayed a lower elongation of 1.85% because of the aggregated CB spots created weak joints. The controlled and uniform dispersion of CB NPs helped to scatter the applied bending force in the softness test. This feasible protocol paves the way for using these facile surface-treated CB NPs as a commercial reinforcement for producing flexible CNF films.

RESUMO

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) exhibit great prospects owing to their varied composition, chemical adaptability, adjustable light-absorption ability, and strong stability. In this study, we report a strategy to synthesize a series of porous high-entropy spinel oxide (HESO) nanofibers (NFs) at a low temperature of 400 °C by a sol-gel electrospinning technique. The key lies in selecting six acetylacetonate salt precursors with similar coordination abilities, maintaining a high-entropy disordered state during the transformation from stable sols to gel NFs. The as-synthesized HESO NFs of (NiCuMnCoZnFe)3O4 show a high specific surface area of 66.48 m2/g, a diverse elemental composition, a dual bandgap, half-metallicity property, and abundant defects. The diverse elements provide various synergistic catalytic sites, and oxygen vacancies act as active sites for electron-hole separation, while the half-metallicity and dual-bandgap structure offer excellent light absorption ability, thus expanding its applicability to a wide range of photocatalytic processes. As a result, the HESO NFs can efficiently convert CO2 into CH4 and CO with high yields of 8.03 and 15.89 µmol g-1 h-1, respectively, without using photosensitizers or sacrificial agents.

RESUMO

Soft actuators inspired by the movement of organisms have attracted extensive attention in the fields of soft robotics, electronic skin, artificial intelligence, and healthcare due to their excellent adaptability and operational safety. Liquid crystal elastomer fiber actuators (LCEFAs) are considered as one of the most promising soft actuators since they can provide reversible linear motion and are easily integrated or woven into complex structures to perform pre-programmed movements such as stretching, rotating, bending, and expanding. The research on LCEFAs mainly focuses on controllable preparation, structural design, and functional applications. This review, for the first time, provides a comprehensive and systematic review of recent advances in this important field by focusing on reversible thermal response LCEFAs. First, the thermal driving mechanism, and direct and indirect heating strategies of LCEFAs are systematically summarized and analyzed. Then, the fabrication methods and functional applications of LCEFAs are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges and technical difficulties that may hinder the performance improvement and large-scale production of LCEFAs are proposed, and the development opportunities of LCEFAs are prospected.

RESUMO

The use of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash, commonly referred to as "fly ash", as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), has been explored to mitigate the CO2 emissions resulting from cement production. Nevertheless, the incorporation of fly ash as an SCM in mortar has been shown to weaken its compressive strength and increase the risk of heavy metal leaching. In light of these challenges, this study aims to comprehensively evaluate the influence of CO2 pressure, temperature, and residual water/binder ratio on the CO2 uptake and compressive strength of mortar when combined with fly ash. Additionally, this study systematically examines the feasibility of mechanochemical pretreatment, which enhances the homogenization of fly ash and augments the density of the mortar's microstructure. The results indicate that the use of mechanochemical pretreatment leads to a notable 43.6% increase in 28-day compressive strength and diminishes the leaching of As, Ba, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn by 17.9-77.8%. Finally, a reaction kinetics model is proposed to elucidate the CO2 sequestration process under varying conditions. These findings offer valuable guidance for incorporating fly ash as an SCM and CO2 sequestrator in mortar.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the present work, acute gastric ulcer models were constructed by administering hydrochloric acid/ethanol. The mice ingested white jade snail secretion (WJSS) through gastric infusion. Ulcer areas in gastric tissue were recorded, and malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were also measured. Notably, high-throughput 16S rDNA analysis of intestinal flora and determination of amino acid composition in feces were performed to understand the effect of WJSS on model mice. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the ulcer area in the WJSS low-, medium- and high-concentration groups declined by 28.02%, 39.57% and 77.85%, respectively. MDA content decreased by 24.71%, 49.58% and 64.25%, and SOD relative enzyme activity fell by 28.19%, 43.37% and 9.60%, respectively. The amounts of amino acids in the low-, medium- and high-concentration groups were slightly lower, and probiotic bacteria such as Bacteroidetes and Lactobacillales increased in different-concentration WJSS groups. Adding WJSS contributes to the establishment of beneficial intestinal flora and the absorption of amino acids. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that WJSS has a beneficial effect on inhibiting hydrochloric acid-ethanolic gastric ulcers, suggesting that WJSS has excellent potential as a novel anti-ulcer agent. Combined with ulcer area, MDA content, SOD content, gut probiotics and other indicators, a high concentration of WJSS had the best protective effect on acute gastric ulcer. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To describe clinical features and intraoperative findings of the patients with exotropia who presented mild V-pattern or vertical deviation, and to investigate the surgical outcomes of anatomical relocation of inferiorly displaced lateral rectus (LR) muscle insertion. METHODS: Detailed ophthalmological evaluations were obtained in 42 consecutive patients, and the horizontal rectus muscle insertions were detected intraoperatively. The displaced insertion of LR muscle was corrected accompanied with classic recession-resection procedure. RESULTS: The inferiorly displaced LR muscle insertions were detected in 19 patients (Group A), while the remaining 23 patients (Group B) had normal insertions. The mean distance of displaced insertion from the normal position was 2.92 ± 1.05 mm (range: 1.0-4.0). Mild V-pattern was more common in Group A (78.9%, 15/19) than Group B (47.8%, 11/23), and the magnitude of V-pattern in Group A (6.16 ± 3.91 PD) was also greater than Group B (3.43 ± 3.92 PD). The fundus extorsions of the affected eyes (9.68 ± 4.77 °) were greater than the contralateral eyes (5.91 ± 5.82 °) in Group A. At the 2 months follow-up, mild V-pattern and mild vertical deviation were corrected by upward transposition. The significant correlations were identified between the pre-operative misalignments and the amounts of misalignments correction. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly half of the cases with mild V-pattern or vertical deviation resulted from the inferiorly displaced LR muscle insertion, so the intraoperative exploration of the LR muscle insertion is strongly suggested. Upward transposition may effectively correct both the mild V-pattern and vertical deviation.

RESUMO

High energy consumption is the main obstacle of melting/vitrification technology for the disposal of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) for industrial applications. To reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs, oxygen enrichment melting was proposed and studied in this work. This research was conducted in a pilot-scale melting furnace, and three melting conditions were compared and discussed. The results showed that 66% of natural gas was saved and the operating cost was reduced by 55% when oxygen enrichment technology was applied to MSWIFA melting. When coal was used as the fuel with the oxygen enrichment melting technology, the operating cost was even lower at 66.39 dollar/ton of fly ash. Because MSWIFA was a Ca-rich material, the relatively high content of Si and Al in the coal fly ash promoted the formation of vitrificated slag, leading to a reduction in the overall pollution toxicity index (OPTI) of MSWIFA by 99.98%. Meanwhile, SO2, HCl, and secondary fly ash were the main pollutants during MSWIFA melting, and when coal was used as the fuel, the emissions of SO2 and HCl could be reduced and the OPTI of secondary fly ash was suppressed. These results suggested that to obtain the lowest operating cost and reduce secondary pollution during MSWIFA melting, the best option consisted of oxygen enrichment technology with coal as the fuel.

RESUMO

Based on the NTRU trapdoor used in NIST's Falcon, a signcryption scheme following the sign-then-encrypt paradigm is constructed. The existing partitioning technique based on Waters hash over the lattice can not complete the security reduction in the standard model for the signature part due to the "partiality" of the pre-image generated with the NTRU trapdoor. To address this, a variant of Waters hash over small integers is proposed and, the probability of the successful reduction is analyzed. The resulting signcryption achieves existential unforgeability under the adaptive chosen-message attacks. By utilizing the uniqueness of the secret and the noise in an NTRU instance, the tag used in encryption is eliminated. Furthermore, a method to construct tamper-sensitive lattice public key encryption is proposed. This approach implants the ciphertext-sensitive information into the lattice public key encryption and binds it to the encrypted information. The malleability to the public key ciphertext triggers the change of the message-signature pair so that the IND-CCA2 security of the entire ciphertext can be guaranteed by the signature for the message. Thanks to the rational design and the efficiency of the NTRU trapdoor, the computational overhead of the proposed scheme is reduced significantly compared to the existing lattice-based signcryption scheme, reaching orders of magnitude improvement in efficiency. The experiment shows that the proposed scheme is efficient.

RESUMO

Cobalt (Co) is an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst but suffers from issues of easy deactivation and instability. Here, it shows that ZrO2 can stabilize Co through interface electron coupling and enables highly efficient 4e- ORR catalysis. Porous carbon nanofibers loaded with dispersed Co-nanodots (≈10 nm, 9.63 wt%) and ZrO2 nanoparticles are synthesized as the catalyst. The electron transfer from the metallic Co to ZrO2 causes interface-oriented electron enrichment that promotes the activation and conversion of O2 , improving the efficiency of 4e- transfer. Moreover, the simulation results show that ZrO2 acts like an electron reservoir to store electrons from Co and slowly release them to the interface, solving the easy deactivation problem of Co. The catalyst exhibits a high half-wave potential (E1/2 ) of 0.84 V, which only decreases by 3.6 mV after 10 000 cycles, showing great stability. Particularly, the enhanced spin polarization of Co in a magnetic field reinforces the interface electron coupling that increases the E1/2 to 0.864 V and decreases the energy barrier of ORR from 0.81 to 0.63 eV, confirming that the proposed strategy is effective for constructing efficient and stable ORR catalysts.

RESUMO

Purpose: To compare bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) with unilateral recession and resection (RR) for divergence excess intermittent exotropia (IXT). Methods: Retrospective analysis of 66 patients with divergence excess IXT who underwent either BLR or RR from January 2013 to December 2020 was conducted. Data on demographics, pre- and postoperative deviations, fusion, stereopsis, control, and accommodative convergence/accommodation ratio were collected. Success was defined as esodeviation ≤5 PD (prism diopter) to exodeviation ≤10 PD with a follow-up time of at least 8.0 ± 2.0 weeks. Results: BLR (42 cases) and RR (24 cases) groups had the same success rate (83.3%, P = 0.688) and similar reduced postoperative deviations both in distance and at near (P > 0.05). Near-distance disparity decreased significantly in both groups (P = 0.000) with no intergroup difference (P = 0.193). Conclusion: BLR and RR were equally effective for divergence excess IXT with comparable outcomes of both distance and near deviations.

RESUMO

Cation intercalation is an effective method to optimize the electronic structures of metal oxides, but tuning intercalation structure and conductivity by manipulating ion movement is difficult. Here, we report a visual topochemical synthesis strategy to control intercalation pathways and structures and realize the rapid synthesis of flexible conductive metal oxide films in one minute at room temperature. Using flexible TiO2 nanofiber films as the prototype, we design three charge-driven models to intercalate preset Li+-ions into the TiO2 lattice slowly (µm/s), rapidly (mm/s), or ultrafast (cm/s). The Li+-intercalation causes real-time color changes of the TiO2 films from white to blue and then black, corresponding to the structures of LixTiO2 and LixTiO2-δ, and the enhanced conductivity from 0 to 1 and 40 S/m. This work realizes large-scale and rapid synthesis of flexible TiO2 nanofiber films with tunable conductivity and is expected to extend the synthesis to other conductive metal oxide films.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the refractive profile of surgical patients with intermittent exotropia (IXT) residing in southern China. METHODS: Medical records of patients who received strabismus surgery between June 2014 and August 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data, including age, sex, refractive errors, preoperative angle of deviation, types of exotropia, accommodative convergence to accommodation ratio (AC/A ratio) and stereopsis, were investigated. RESULTS: A total of 2250 patients were included, and 93.6% of patients were younger than 30 years of age. The mean angle of exodeviation was 37.0 ± 14.7 prism degree (PD) and 37.5 ± 15.8 PD at distance and near, respectively. Mean spherical equivalent refraction (SER) values were -0.7 ± 2.4 D and -0.8 ± 2.5 D in the dominant eye and nondominant eye, respectively. Significant differences in SER were observed between the dominant eye and nondominant eye among children at 6 years old or younger. The percentage of myopia increased from 11.0% in children (≤6 years old) to 77.9% in teenagers (13-18 years of age). Significant positive associations between the magnitude of exodeviation and the magnitude of myopia were observed (p < 0.0001). Patients with convergence insufficiency type IXT (p < 0.0001) or AC/A < 2 (p < 0.05) showed a greater magnitude of myopia. The mild hyperopia group included a larger proportion of subjects showing a certain degree of stereopsis (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Myopia was present in more than half of our patients (51.2%), which is much higher than the percentage in the general population of southern China. Patients with convergence insufficiency, an AC/A ratio < 2, or a larger angle of deviation tended to have a greater magnitude of myopia.

RESUMO

2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are actively pursued as pseudocapacitive materials for supercapacitors owing to their advantages in electronic conductivity and surface reactivity. Increasing the fraction of ─O terminal groups in Ti3 C2 Tx is a promising approach to improve the pseudocapacitive charge storage in H2 SO4 electrolytes, but it suffers from a lack of effective functionalization methods and stability of the groups in practical operation. Here a low-temperature and environment-friendly approach via the interaction of nonequilibrium plasmas with Ti3 C2 Tx dispersion is demonstrated to generate abundant and stable surface-terminating O groups. The impact of the discharge environment (Ar, O2 , and H2 ) on the structural characteristics and electrochemical performance of Ti3 C2 Tx nanosheets is studied. The Ti3 C2 Tx modified in Ar and H2 maintains their original morphology but a significantly lower F content. Consequently, an extraordinarily high content (78.5%) of surface-terminating O groups is revealed by the high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra for the Ti3 C2 Tx samples modified in H2 plasma-treated solutions. Additionally, the Ti3 C2 Tx treated using H2 plasmas exhibits the best capacitive performance of 418.3 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1 , which can maintain 95.88% capacity after 10 000 cycles. These results contribute to the development of advanced nanostructured pseudocapacitive electrode materials for renewable energy storage applications.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess metrics of diffusion tensor imagining (DTI) in evaluating microstructural abnormalities of horizontal extraocular muscles (EOM) in esotropia. METHODS: Six adult concomitant esotropia patients, 5 unilateral abducent paralysis patients and 2 healthy volunteers were enrolled. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DTI were performed on all subjects using 3T MR scanner. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) of medial and lateral rectus muscles were measured and compared between patients group and control group. RESULTS: Medial rectus MD and RD within the adducted eye of concomitant patients was significantly greater than that in unilateral abducent paralysis patients (0.259×10-2 mm2/s vs 0.207×10-2 mm2/s, P=0.014; 0.182×10-2 mm2/s vs 0.152×10-2 mm2/s, P=0.017). Both strabismus patients showed a significantly decreased MD and AD than that obtained in normal controls for lateral rectus muscles (P<0.05). Medial rectus MD of the adducted eye in concomitant strabismus patients was significantly decreased than that in healthy controls (0.259×10-2 mm2/s vs 0.266×10-2 mm2/s, P=0.010). Lateral rectus AD of the adducted eye in concomitant strabismus patients was significantly decreased as compared with that in healthy controls (0.515×10-2 mm2/s vs 0.593×10-2 mm2/s, P=0.013). No statistically significant differences were present between the adducted and fixating eyes in concomitant strabismus patients. CONCLUSION: DTI represents a feasible technique to assess tissue characteristics of EOM. The effects of eye position changes on DTI parameters are subtle. Decreased MD and RD could be evidence for remodeling of the medial rectus muscle contracture. Lower medial and lateral recuts MD of concomitant esotropia patients indicates a thinner fibrous structure of the EOM. Lower MD and AD should be general character of esotropia.

RESUMO

MiRNA-155 is a typical biomarker for breast cancer. Since its low concentration in the physiological environment and the limitations of conventional miRNA detection methods like Northern imprinting and RT-qPCR, convenient, real-time, and rapid detection methods are urgently needed. In this work, an electrochemical biosensor was constructed based on the flower-like MoSe2@1T-MoS2 heterojunction electrode material and specific RNA recognition probes, which can realize the rapid determination of miRNA-155 content with a wide detection range from 1 fM to 1 nM and a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.34 fM. Furthermore, the contents of miRNA-155 in blood samples of tumor-bearing mice and normal mice were measured as 724.93 pM and 21.42 pM, respectively by this biosensor, demonstrating its strong identification ability and miRNA-155 can be regarded as an ideal diagnostic marker. On this basis, a portable sensor platform was designed for on-site detection simulation and showed good recovery efficiency from 95.80% to 98.69%. Meanwhile, compared with the standard detection method RT-qPCR, the accuracy and reliability of the biosensor were verified, indicating that the biosensor has the potential to provide point-of-care testing (POCT) for the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

RESUMO

The immeasurability of real-time dioxin emissions is the principal limitation to controlling and reducing dioxin emissions in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI). Existing methods for dioxin emissions prediction are based on machine learning with inadequate dioxin datasets. In this study, the deep learning models are trained through larger online dioxin emissions data from a waste incinerator to predict real-time dioxin emissions. First, data are collected and the operating data are preprocessed. Then, the dioxin emission prediction performance of the machine learning and deep learning models, including long short-term memory (LSTM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN), with normal input and time-series input are compared. We evaluate the applicability of each model and find that the performance of the deep learning models (LSTM and CNN) has improved by 36.5% and 30.4%, respectively, in terms of the mean square error (MSE) with the time-series input. Moreover, through feature analysis, we find that temperature, airflow, and time dimension are considerable for dioxin prediction. The results are meaningful for optimizing the control of dioxins from MSWI.
